Spiritual Journey -

CHATURMASYA

*Let us not think that Chathurmasya is only for Sanyasis.*

*Chaturmasya* is primarily a niyama (discipline) rather than a severe fast for householders.

The emphasis is on inner purification, scriptural study, and devotion while continuing one's family and professional responsibilities.

A practical observance for a householder is:

Perform Sandhyāvandanam and daily worship without fail.

Chant the Bhagavad Gita, Vishnu Sahasranama, or recite stotras such as Dakṣiṇāmūrti Stotram, Sivananda Laharī, or Govinda Aṣṭakam according to your ista devada.

Study the Upaniṣads, Bhagavad Gita or other Vedanta texts regularly.

Practice moderation in food, avoid overeating, and adopt one or more dietary restrictions (such as avoiding leafy vegetables, curd, milk, or urad dal in successive months, according to family tradition). Observe Ekādaśī with sincerity if your health permits.

Perform charity (Dana), especially feeding deserving people, cows, or supporting Vedic scholars.

*Avoid anger, gossip, harsh speech, and unnecessary entertainment*

.

*Increase Japa, Meditation, and Satsanga.*

*Adi Shankaracharya* repeatedly emphasizes that purity of mind (*chitta-śuddhi*) is the real fruit of such observances. External disciplines are valuable because they help cultivate detachment, devotion, and fitness for *Self-knowledge*.

Those interested in *Vedanta* and regularly recite texts like the Narayaṇiyam and the Bhagavad Gita, Chaturmasya is an excellent period to take up a fixed daily discipline for example, one chapter of the Gita one dasakam of Narayaṇiyam, and a period of silent japa every day.

Thank you for your kind understanding and Cooperation.

Be blissful.
