Neti Neti (pronounced nay-tee nay-tee) is an ancient Sanskrit expression

Neti Neti (pronounced nay-tee nay-tee) is an ancient Sanskrit expression that translates to "not this, not this" or "neither this, nor that". It is a foundational concept and meditative practice in Hindu philosophy, primarily found in the Upanishads, Advaita Vedanta, and Jnana Yoga.

The Meaning:

*What is it*? At its core, Neti Neti is a method of analytical negation.

The philosophy posits that the ultimate reality (*Brahman*) and the true Self (*Atman*) are infinite, formless, and beyond human conceptualization.

*Because any positive description ("God/Truth is this") makes the infinite finite, the sages concluded that truth can only be defined by systematically stating what it is not.*

The Why: *Why is it used*?

The practice is used to help seekers strip away false identities, attachments, and ego to realize pure, non-dual awareness.

*In this philosophy, the observer cannot be the observed.*

*You will realise that Seer and the Seen are one and the same "Atman". There is only one Atman and there is no second.*

Everything the mind can perceive, define, or experience through the senses is considered an *object*.

By examining the layers of your existence, you realize:

"*I am not my body*" (because it changes and decays).

"*I am not my emotions*" (because they come and go).

"*I am not my mind* or *thoughts*" (because you are the witness observing the thoughts).

*By continuously discarding* ("not this, not this") everything that you are not, you eventually strip away the false ego and discover what is left: the eternal, unchanging pure consciousness.

*How to Practice It?*

A "Neti Neti search" acts like peeling back the layers of an onion.

You can practice it in your daily life and meditation with a few simple steps:

*Notice the Object:* Observe any thought, feeling, or physical sensation that arises.

*Disidentify:* Tell yourself, "I am observing this thought/sensation, therefore I cannot be the thought itself".

*Negate:* Affirm, "Neti, neti" (not this) to that identification.

*Witness:* Rest as the silent witness that remains after the negation is complete.

*To learn more about how this ancient practice fits into modern spiritual inquiries, you can explore the analytical meditation guides or explore the deep philosophical teachings given in Scriptures and Upanishads.*
